Gulf Oil’s instantly recognisable orange disc is now synonymous around the world
with high quality products, endurance and passion. The Gulf Oil brand has come to symbolise iconic style and is widely regarded as one of the most admired in the world.

The story stretches back to the 1930’s. But it was not until 1966, when Grady Davis, the Vice President of Gulf Oil, bought himself a Ford GT40 and formed a lasting friendship with John Wyer. So began the most successful commercial partnership in racing history. What followed was three world championships, three outright victories at Le Mans and an enduring relationship with Porsche 917’s, GT40’s, McLaren, and Aston Martin.

Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert established new records everywhere with the Porsche 917. Their exploits at Brands Hatch, Le Mans, Spa Francorchamps, the Nurburgring and Daytona are now legendary.

Steve McQueen’s film, ’Le Mans’, gave the Gulf Porsche 917 an iconic status which is today a priceless symbol of endurance and automotive styling.

Gulf went on to win the Le Mans 24 Hour again in 1975, sponsoring the Mirage Ford driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell.  Gulf returned to Le Mans with Derek in 1994 when he drove a Kremer Porsche K8 to sixth place.

Gulf had a hugely successful partnership with Bruce McLaren’s team in Can-Am, Indy Cars and Formula One. For three years the Gulf McLaren F1 GTR was dominant, winning the 1996 BPR Global Endurance Series and the GT Class at Le Mans in 1997.

In the centenary year of 2001, Gulf Oil sponsored an Audi R8 in which Stefan Johansson won the European Le Mans Series.

Today, Roald Goethe and Mike Wainwright, through their passion for the brand, continue the Gulf racing legend, taking the iconic Blue & Orange back to the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans with Porsche.
